DUKE'S VINEYARD "Magpie Hill" - Reserve Riesling - Porongurup, Great Southern - Australia

Another beautiful vintage in a long line of wonderful Rieslings from Duke's Vineyard. From a cooler vintage but with all the power, drive and grace you have come to expect. The '22 is a many-layered blend of the depth of the older block with the complexity of the young block. Lovely fruit/acid balance. Very pale straw, flinty green hues; aromas of lime zest, Meyer lemon, lemon sherbet, hints of cucumber and green melon; palate of lemon and lime, hints of white citrus blossom, soft powdery textural acidity, long, mineral, elegant. One to age.

Critique Review

“This 2022 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling is the first under new ownership, and it leads with a distinctly different nose than usual. It's challenging to pin down, but here goes: in place of the pristine white flowers and talc that is expected, there is swirling ash/embers, straw/hay, bison grass and graphite/bitumen and a pronounced petrichor/ozone character leads the charge. Behind it are pencil shavings, Dispirin (aspirin), the crackle of summer grass and oxalis. It's salty and mineral, gray and rocky, austere and sleek. Whether it's the season or not, this is a change in style for the Magpie Hill Reserve. Very different indeed.”

Vineyard Info

Duke’s Vineyard is situated at the western foot of the heritage-listed, ancient granite Porongurup Range in the Great Southern Wine Region. Our site currently consists of 10 hectares of Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz vines — varieties beautifully suited to the region. The original owner, Duke Ranson, primarily chose the site by way of aesthetics: stunning views, a unique position at the western foot of the ancient range, and serenity; but also for practicality: water supply that includes a pure, spring-fed dam and run-off from the national park, and soils with good drainage yet ample water retention ability. In this captivating corner of the Great Southern, where the cool climate and unique geological makeup converge, Ben and his team are continuing Duke’s tradition of growing the finest quality fruit to craft wines of exceptional quality and distinction. The Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling fruit comes from the crest of the vineyard on the easternmost side where the vines have to work a bit harder to find water with their roots and the soil is beautiful granitic sand which creates the special profile of our Porongurup Riesling.
