Critique Review

"Made from vines planted in 1972, the 2020 Chenin Blanc Bush Vines begins with aromas of white peach, pineapple skin, yellow apple and wax melon with a dusty floral tension. Medium-bodied, the wine displays flavors of cantaloupe and honeydew melon with yellow pear before showing a balanced structure. The wine ends with a delightful conclusion that lingers with a soft mineral tension. Only 23,000 bottles were made, making this bottling an excellent value for the price."

Anthony Mueller for the Wine Advocate.

Vineyard Info

Mooiplaas Wine Estate & Private Nature Reserve dates back to 1806. Mooiplaas, meaning beautiful farm, is a historic and traditional working wine farm. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of ancient mineral-rich soils in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, overlooking Cape Town. Here brothers Tielman and Louis Roos produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition and artisan wine-making techniques that make the most of the unique terroir. Grapes from the Houmoed vineyard block were used, a dry land bush vine block, 2 ha in size, planted by Nicolaas Roos in 1972 on rootstock Richter 99, altitude 280 m above sea level on a western slope of the Bottelary Hills. A clear line of sight to False Bay, which implies an afternoon cooling sea breeze. The bush vines grow on oakleaf soil with high potential.
