"The 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Laurus offers an alluring smoldering edge, with singed alder, tobacco and mocha notes working together to augment the core of steeped black currant and black cherry fruit. A licorice root echo runs through the finish, imparting an extra twinge of grip."

Wine Spectator, March 2019.

"Complexities of crushed mineral, coffee grinds and hazelnut accent pristine but ripe blackberry and fig in this blend of Grenache (57%) and Syrah (43%). It's ample and juicy but elegant, maintaining a freshness on the midpalate and tense tannins. While bold in its youth it should gain finesse through 2030."

Vineyard Info

The story of the Gabriel Meffre Winery began in 1936, when Gabriel and his wife, both passionate about wine, created their ‘Négociant-Vinificateur’ business in Gigondas. More than 80 years later, the family business has built on its strong foundations and has established its reputation as a leading Winery in the southern Rhone Valley.

LAURUS means ‘Laurel’ in Latin, a Roman symbol of excellence. Here excellence is all about “terroir”: the grapes are grown on parcels selected for their ability to express the very best of each Appellation. The term “terroir” encompasses a soil, a climate and people. Here it is expressed through sustainable partnerships with wine-growers who share our vision. The maturing process in 275-litre Laurus barrels refines the structure, producing complex wines with plenty of character and good cellaring potential.

The LAURUS CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE is made from a selection of two terroirs to achieve a fine balance between strength and elegance: - Rolled pebbles in the "La Crau" sector, on quaternary terraces for the Grenache grapes. - Clay and limestone soils from the Cretaceous period and soft sandstone from the Miocene period for the Syrah grapes.
