Vintage: 2016

The estate's great wine comes from the oldest vines. Château Lafon-Rochet is a wine that is both simple and complex. An expressive nose, on freshness, with crunchy ripe fruits, red berries (blackcurrant, strawberry, raspberry). A clear attack, fresh with spreading tannins and a fine structure. Smooth and complex finales with a lovely fruity aromatic aftertaste, cinnamon.

Critique Review

"Seductive, with a gush of dark plum and blackberry preserve notes leading off, while light bay, dark tobacco and charcoal notes peek through. Has a racy edge through the finish, even with the warm fruit keeping the upper hand. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc."

Wine Spectator

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Lafon-Rochet is scented of cassis, blackberries, herbs and soil with tar and underbrush. Medium to full bodied, the palate is firm and grainy with herb sparks and an earthy finish."

Robert Parker

"The upper Médoc did brilliantly in 2018, and that's certainly apparent when tasting the 2018 Château Lafon-Rochet. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a gorgeous bouquet of ripe black and blue fruits, lead pencil, forest floor, chocolate, and leafy herbs, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, mouth-filling texture, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't quite have the precision of the top wines in the appellation, but it's loaded with charm and character, and I'd certainly be thrilled to drink a bottle. This rich, textured, flavorful Saint-Estèphe will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for two decades."

Vineyard Info

Château Lafon-Rochet is one of the leading lights in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The 45-ha single block vineyard, which overlooking Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel, with the Gironde Estuary in the distance, is located on one of the finest winegrowing soils in the world. The ancient origins of this growth date back in the 16th century.

It is in 1960 that Guy Tesseron, with a background in Cognac, bought the domain. After 10 years of major efforts, he brought the estate up to its former standing and bought a further 25 hectares of vines. In 1999, Michel Tesseron and his sister, Princess Caroline Poniatowska, took over the management of the family estate. Basile joined his father, Michel, in 2007. 2010 marks the beginning of the conversion of the viticultural technique in "Biodynamie".
