Chateau de Santenay / Domaine du Chateau Philippe Le Hardi - Clos De Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy - France

This mythical Grand Cru from Burgundy was established by the monks from the Cîteaux Abbey during the 12th century. The castle and the cellar of Clos de Vougeot are owned since the last war by the Chevaliers du Tastevin. A seductive and hedonistic face of Burgundy, with beguiling aromatics of violets and griotte cherries. Sweeping and plush, with excellent intensity and voluminous tannins.

Product Description

Description

Clos de Vougeot is surely the ultimate representation of winegrowing in Burgundy. Several producers compete to achieve the best expression of the same terroir. Aware of the challenge, Chteau de Santenay upholds this tradition of competition, initiated by the monks of Citeaux abbey in the 12th century. The meticulous care taken in the production of this wine results in well-rounded, refined, mellow tannins, whose velvety texture accompanies an elegant bouquet. Aromas of liquorice, violets and truffles develop after a few years of ageing in the cellar.

Critique Review

Powerful tannins and wood flavors dominate the wine at this young stage. It has plenty of the richness of the vintage to promise a generous future. Packed with ripe red-berry fruits and balanced acidity, it will be a very fine wine. Drink from 2024. (2016 vintage)

Vineyard Info

The estate of Domaine du Chateau Philippe Le Hardi (formerly known as Château de Santenay) is spread over an area of 90 ha ( 222 acres) stretching from the southern vineyards of Mercurey in Côte Chalonnaise up to the Grand Cru of Clos des Vougeot in Cote de Nuits. The castle was once the residence of the Duke of Burgundy Philippe Le Hardi (Philippe the Bold) ( 1342-1404) who was the first and foremost ambassador of Burgundy and its great wines. A third of our estate is located in the Côte d’Or with vineyards in Aloxe-Corton, Beaune 1er Cru, St Aubin, Pommard, and... Santenay of course and the rest is located in the up and coming appellation of Mercurey.

The estate was converted to sustainable farming in 2004, Terra-vitis certified. We apply practices which respect the environment and don’t use herbicides pesticides, or artificial chemicals. Our goal is to maintain life in the soil and allow each plot’s terroir to express itself in the wines produced there. To this day, Pinot noir is still the grape used for all burgundy’s flagship red wines.
