Baron De Ley "Gran Reserva" - Rioja - Spain

If there are styles of wine in the world that deserve the definition of “great classics”, without any doubt one of them are the Gran Reservas from Rioja where a great emphasis is put in the long ageing times to obtain a long lifespan and great complexity. An attractive red ruby colour, starting to show some orange nuances, sign of its noble ageing. It delivers a remarkable aromatic intensity in the nose, displaying a bouquet of ripe fruits and raisin integrated with a toasted and balsamic character. After some time in the glass these aromas evolve towards seductive traces of infusions, spices and tobacco. The attack in the mouth is very soft, developing an unctuous and round sensation with silky tannins, lively and fresh. Vintage in image may vary.

Description

If there are styles of wine in the world that deserve the definition of "great classics", without any doubt one of them are the Gran Reservas from Rioja where a great emphasis is put in the long ageing times to obtain a long lifespan and great complexity. Lovely ruby-red with medium depth of colour and slight brick-red hues, the text-book definition of Rioja Gran Reservas. Great aromatic intensity on the nose, less fruit-driven, but generous aromatics of lavender, ginger and saffron. A round and balanced palate, displaying silky tannins while still remaining fresh and lively. The aftertaste is long and lingering, it offers hints of toasted wood and dried fruits.

Critique Review

Aromas of sweet berries and tobacco with cigar box and dried leaves, following through to a medium to full body with round, fine tannins. Juicy palate and a delicious, savory finish. Balanced and traditional. Drink now.

Vineyard Info

Baron de Ley was founded in 1985 by a group of four Rioja wine professionals who had a dream of establishing a “château” with their own vineyards in Rioja...30 years later, Baron de Ley has grown to become one of the biggest viticultors of Rioja (more than 700 Has.) and an award-winning winery among the elite of Rioja top brands.

The winery and headquarters are situated at the Monastery of Imas undertaken in 95 and 96, and uses the furniture to recreate the Golden Age of the house at the end of the 19th century, when the Jiménez family owned the house and managed the farm.

A spectacular fusion of the old Benedictine tradition and the great wines of today. Barón de Ley Gran Reserva is made from grapes grown in our Cenicero vineyards where the orientation of the slopes, Atlantic climate and low yields offer us the perfect grapes for this style of wine.
