Paitin Barbaresco Serraboella - Piedmont - Italy

Serraboella is an historical Cru of Neive, showing dark vibrant notes that range from wild berries to violets at the first glance, than licorice, dried leaves of tobacco and tomatoes, together with some blood orange hints complete the complexity of this wine. This is hold together by a rare verticality perceived thanks to his long aftertaste. Structure dressed with an irresistible elegance is the trait of Serraboella and the signature of Paitin.

Critique Review

The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella delivers the same grace and beautiful fragility that you get in the other wines in Paitin's portfolio of new releases. This production of 9,800 bottles shows a slow and steady progression of wild berry, forest floor, blue flower, dried lilac, blood orange and delicate licorice or tar. There's a lot going on in terms of the bouquet, and all that energy is nicely balanced by the wine's lithe body and its natural tannic backbone.

The Wine Advocate

I love the fresh fruit tea to this, along with lilacs, citrus and rose petals. Medium body, plenty of firm tannins and a tangy, orange-flavored finish. Drink from 2021.

James Suckling

Underbrush, menthol and cracked dill aromas lead the nose. The vigorous palate offers crunchy sour cherry, orange zest and licorice set against assertive, close-grained tannins and racy acidity.

Vineyard Info

In 1796 Benedetto Elia purchased the Sor of the Bricco di Neive (today known as the Serraboella Cru - MGA). A few years later in 1808, when he began to understand its potential bought the underground cellar that was built by the monks in the XVI century along with a few other parcels contiguous to the Sor. The family is living in Paitin still to this day. Paitin is the name of a property that the Elia family owned on the border between Neive, in the province of Cuneo and Castagnole, in the province of Asti. Having to do with their private bank in both provinces, this property was to them strategic, so that they were named after this property: Paitin.

Today the son and the nephew of Maria and Secondo: Giovanni, Silvano and Luca are carrying on the art that for more than 200 years and 8 generations allowed their family to arizste (resist, persevere).
